Welcome to Nature Works, a website about living nature's way in an effort to improve and enhance our lives in amazing ways. It looks at the natural laws of nature and identifies how they can be used for the futherment and improvement of the lives of millions of people living on this planet.

In its previous incarnation, this website was the home of the River Bend Nature Works,. If you have found this site and are looking for information on this organization, we have included some info and contact data for your convenience.

About the River Bend Nature Works

River Bend Nature Works is an environmental education center located in Wichita Falls, Texas. The Nature Works pavilion over looks one of the most beautiful parts of the city, a 15-acre wooded site. A one-mile interpretive nature trail loops through the site, providing visitors with an opportunity to see how nature works. The River Bend Nature Center is located at the entrance to Lucy Park at 2200 3rd Street, Wichita Falls, Texas 76301

wetlandsVisitors will especially enjoy the wetland pond habitat, bird habitat, weather station, and outdoor butterfly garden.

Trained field guides lead visitors through the trail and make the experience educational and enjoyable for the entire family.



Butterfly Houseworking butterfly farmThe Children's Butterfly House is a working butterfly farm demonstrating the entire life cycle of the butterfly. Children and adults will delight in watching a caterpillar turn into a chrysalis and, then, watching a butterfly emerge from the chrysalis.



butterfly farmDozens of butterflies live in the house from May through October each year. A special butterfly education program is available for elementary school students.

A Pioneer Story... Life on the Great Plains is an outdoor exhibit demonstrating how pioneer families used the natural resources available to them to create a new life on the Plains. The exhibit includes a covered wagon, general store, Pioneer Daily Life exhibit and demonstration gardens with medicinal plants, cooking herbs, crops, vegetables and other useful plants.



Call (940) 767-0843 to make an appointment for a guided tour for your group or class. The exhibit is open year round for guided tours. In December 2003, a special program, A Pioneer Christmas, is available for group tours.

This activity includes creating an old-fashioned Christmas decoration.



My Big Backyard... The children's gardening exhibit that makes plants fun for everyone! Children become involved in the Giant Sunflower circle, the Hyacinth Bean Teepee, the full vegatable garden, the "Flower Bed", soil plot and many other imagination & learning stations. Tours with themes changing with the seasons are available April through Novemeber.

Summer 2004 Programs:

EARLY BLOOMERS: June 1, 3, 8, 10, 15, 17, 22, 24, and 29 from 10 - 11 am. Pre-K through 2nd graders learn about the world of plants while using their senses to explore the garden.

Cost is $3 per child and their parents are free.

SPLASH IN THE GARDEN: July 1, 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22, 27, and 29 from 10 - 11 am. Pre-K through 2nd graders have fun learning about the garden while participating in water games and activities.

Cost is $3 per child and their parents are free.



Wild Bird Habitat... Dedicated on Earth Day, April 22, 2003 and features:

50+ different plants representing native and adapted plants for North Texas

Designed to attract and feed birds

Habitat includes trees, water and space; all that is needed for birds to survive

Three memorial oak trees were planted in memory of: Mr. Charles Prothro, Mr. Morris Seydell and Dr. David Borman.



River Bend Nature Works is a nonprofit organization dedicated to interpreting and illustrating the theme: "Natural resource conservation benefits people and their environment." The Nature Center encourages people to explore and enjoy their natural environmental while learning innovative ways to be good stewards of our natural resources.

River Bend Nature Works includes a large pavilion overlooking a 15 acre wooded site. The Elizabeth Prothro Pavilion is a beautiful stone structure with high vaulted ceilings. The pavilion area consists of 7,000 square feet of space, 20 picnic tables, four handicap-accessible restrooms and drinking fountains.

There is floor space to provide comfortable table seating for up to 300 people.
